What is Family and Relationship Counselling?

Family and Relationship Counselling in varying degrees considers family/couple/individual patterns of interaction, belief systems, narratives or stories, historical context that might provide some meaning to why problems have developed and how they are maintained.

The way in which I work is to provide a safe environment where clients are able to explore themseves and their relationships.  Through conversations clients are able to give meaning to their stories and decide whether the stories that they are telling are the ones they want to hold in their lives.  As a counsellor I will work with clients to create alternative stories that fit better and make clients feel better about themselves and their relationships.  As much as we are in relationship with others we also have a relationship with ourselves and I believe it is important to understand self in order to develop the way we want to be and live in the world.

The most important part of any counselling or therapy is that there is a good relationship between clients and counsellor.  Without that how are stories to be told?  I work in a very open way where every voice is valued.  I will not judge or take sides.
